What is a Domain Registrar?

A domain registrar is an organization that manages domain registration for Top-Level Domain (TLD) registries. Registrars provide registration services and sell domain names to registrants.

More About Domain Registrars

A registrar works with both registrants and a registry to sell domain names, provide registration services, and offer other domain-related services. Its main job is to reserve domain names and assign IP addresses to them.

Every time a user buys a domain, the registrar updates the registry with this information. It keeps track of which domain names are taken and can even offer a search tool so that potential registrants can view available options. Plus, many registrars offer add-on services such as domain privacy.

There are many domain registrars, and each one needs accreditation from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
