What is an Expired Domain?

Expired domains are previously-registered domain names that have not been renewed beyond their registration periods. A domain and any services associated with it immediately become inactive upon expiration.

More About Expired Domains

Domains are never owned. Instead, they are leased for a finite amount of time. Once domains expire, they are no longer associated with their IP addresses. Therefore, searching for an expired domain will yield no results.

However, an expired domain can be purchased and reused for a new IP address. A domain is placed in a grace period once it expires. If the owner fails to renew the registration within the grace period, they forfeit ownership of the domain. Finally, the domain is auctioned to the highest bidder.
