What is Propagation?

When you register a new domain or point an existing one to a new server, it takes time for that information to propagate (update) throughout the web. That information propagates through Domain Name System (DNS) servers.

More About Propagation

When you register a domain and point it towards a server, it usually takes some time for that domain to start working. That is because the domain records need to propagate using the Domain Name System (DNS).

The DNS uses a collection of servers that store records of who owns which domain and to which address it points towards. Every time you register a domain or update its records, that information needs to be distributed throughout that system.

Typically, that process doesn’t take long. However, most registrars advise you to wait at least a few hours up to half a day for the information to propagate and the domain to work correctly.
