What is Proximity?

In web design, the principle of proximity means that elements related to each other should be grouped together. That creates the effect of visual proximity, which makes it easy to connect one component to another.

More About Proximity

Great web design gives users an idea of how a page works and how to interact with it with only visual cues. One of those cues is alignment. How you group elements together (or don’t) tells users whether they’re related or not.

For example, if you see a contact form, its fields will be grouped. That alignment and their visual similarity tell users that they’re dealing with a single element. The same logic applies to the submission button or any Call to Action (CTA) next to another element.

If you place elements too far apart, there is no visual alignment. Therefore, users won’t be able to make the connection between them unless you explicitly tell them.
