What Does Rasterization Mean?

Raster images are graphics created with rectangular pixels in a grid formation. Common raster image file types include PNG, GIF, and JPEG/JPG.

More About Rasterization

Most images on the web are raster files. Raster images are made up of pixels aligned in a grid format. The more pixels the image has, the greater its resolution, which means you’ll see a greater level of detail.

There are several types of raster image files, including PNG, GIF, and JPG. Not all images on the web are raster files, though.

There are also vector images, which are made up of paths. Vector images have an advantage over raster files because they’re indefinitely scalable. When you increase or decrease the resolution of a raster image, the number of pixels doesn’t change, which means the visual quality declines.
