What is a Ping?

A ping is a program that enables you to test a connection to a server. When you send a ping, you get information about how long it takes to get a response. That response indicates the server’s “latency”.

More About Pings

When you ping a server, it should send a response. How long that response takes to reach your computer will determine the level of latency between you and that server.

Higher latency translates to slower website loading times because the server might take too long to respond to visitor requests. Low-latency pings usually mean that your server is well optimized (or not currently under stress).

You can ping any IP address or URL via the command line. The command for pinging a server is “ping” across all operating systems. If the ping times out, the server isn’t responding to the connection attempt.
